LTL rates depend on a class rating that penalizes light, bulky freight, so a shipment of 10 lightweight pallets can price far higher than its weight suggests. Partial pricing skips class entirely, which is why it often comes in below the LTL quote for the same freight.
As a rule of thumb, partial makes sense once you’re past about 6 pallets or 5,000 pounds. Below that, LTL is usually cheaper. Above roughly 18 pallets, a full truckload typically wins. In between, partial is generally the lowest-cost option that still moves direct.
