What Is Expedited Freight Service?
Expedited shipping means your freight is assigned a dedicated truck that goes directly to the destination with no other stops, no terminal routing, and no waiting for a trailer to fill. The truck is dispatched for your load and nothing else.
On longer runs, we use team drivers. Two drivers alternate at the wheel so the truck keeps moving through the hours a solo driver has to spend parked under federal hours-of-service rules. A solo driver covers roughly 500 miles a day. A team covers closer to 1,000, which turns a four-day cross-country run into two.
Expedited costs more than standard transit, and it should only be used when speed genuinely matters. When it does, the freight bill is usually the smallest number in the equation compared to a shutdown line, a missed retail window, or a customer commitment on the line.
How It Works
Team Drivers: How We Beat Standard Transit
Federal hours-of-service rules limit a solo driver to 11 hours of driving in a 14-hour window, followed by a mandatory 10-hour break. That’s the ceiling, and it’s why a standard truckload from Los Angeles to the East Coast takes four to five days regardless of how urgent it is.
A team truck carries two drivers who trade off. While one drives, the other rests in the sleeper, so the truck itself almost never stops. The same coast-to-coast run that takes a solo driver four to five days is typically completed in two to three by a team.
Team capacity is limited and it books quickly, particularly during peak season and around holidays. The earlier you call, the better the rate and the more certain the commitment.
When Shippers Use Expedited
Production line down and waiting on parts. A retail or distribution center appointment with penalties for missing it. Perishable freight with a narrow shelf life. Trade shows, product launches, and store openings with a fixed date. Recovering a schedule after a supplier delay, a carrier no-show, or a service failure by another provider. Medical, aerospace, and automotive freight where downtime costs more per hour than the shipment is worth.
